Technology

Smart Hardware. Smarter Software.

TheKoi isn't a screen strapped to a car. It's a fully integrated advertising platform — hardware, software, and data intelligence working together in real time across every vehicle in the fleet.

The display

Transparent hardware for the rear window.

A transparent LED unit measuring 504mm × 250mm, mounted to the interior side of the rear window. No roof racks. No suction cups. No adhesive. No exterior modification of any kind.

The display is powered through the vehicle's standard 12V outlet, making it universally compatible across sedans, SUVs, pickups, and vans. Drivers can toggle it on or off instantly. It survives car washes, Canadian winters, and daily commutes without removal.

Static images only — engineered for clarity at close range in slow-moving urban traffic, where the vehicle behind you is your audience.

Geo-targeting engine

Every ad knows where it is.

Every TheKoi display is GPS-enabled and connected to our cloud platform. That means every ad knows exactly where it is, every second it's on the road.

Advertisers can define proximity zones around their locations — a 3 km radius around a restaurant, a 5 km ring around a retail chain's storefronts, a neighbourhood-level fence around a new condo development. When a TheKoi vehicle enters the zone, the ad activates. When it leaves, the ad rotates out. No wasted impressions. No spray-and-pray.

For multi-location businesses, geo-locks can be stacked across dozens of addresses — each one triggering the right creative at the right location automatically.

Campaign management platform

Self-serve control from launch to reporting.

Advertisers manage everything through a self-serve dashboard — no phone calls, no media buyers, no PDF rate cards.

Real-time impression tracking. See how many people your campaign is reaching, where, and when — updated live as vehicles move through the city.

Geographic heatmaps. Visualize exactly where your impressions are being delivered, block by block.

Ad rotation control. Each vehicle cycles through a 2-minute ad loop with 20-second slots. Up to six advertisers share a single vehicle, each receiving dedicated screen time on every rotation.

Campaign scheduling. Set start dates, end dates, dayparting rules, and budget caps. The platform handles delivery automatically.

Performance reporting. Downloadable reports with impression volumes, geographic distribution, time-of-day breakdowns, and CPM calculations — built for the same teams that run your digital and social campaigns.

Fleet intelligence

A data layer that gets sharper as the fleet grows.

As the network scales, TheKoi's data layer gets smarter. Every vehicle in the fleet generates anonymized, aggregated data on traffic patterns, route density, dwell times, and geographic impression concentration.

This data powers three things: better ad delivery for our advertisers, smarter route optimization for our drivers, and a future standalone data product with commercial value to urban planners, real estate developers, and municipal transportation agencies.

The more vehicles on the road, the sharper the data. The sharper the data, the more valuable every impression becomes.

Safety systems

Controls that are always on.

TheKoi's platform enforces a suite of automated safety controls that operate without driver intervention.

Speed Limiter. Displays deactivate above 80 km/h. TheKoi is built for dense, slow-moving urban traffic — not highways.

School Zone Detection. Within 1 km of any public school, advertising content is suppressed and replaced with a School Zone notification.

Emergency Zone Deactivation. Displays go dark automatically near hospitals, police stations, and fire stations.

Community Zone Suppression. Playgrounds, community centres, and public parks trigger automatic deactivation.

Adaptive Brightness. Display brightness adjusts in real time based on ambient light conditions to prevent glare for following drivers and pedestrians at night.

Every one of these controls is enforced at the platform level. Drivers don't manage them. Advertisers can't override them. They're always on.

Built for scale

From 50 vehicles to thousands without rebuilding.

TheKoi's architecture is designed to go from 50 vehicles in downtown Toronto to thousands across multiple cities without rebuilding anything. The cloud platform manages ad delivery, safety enforcement, GPS tracking, and campaign reporting for every vehicle independently — whether the fleet is 50 or 5,000.

New drivers are onboarded at pop-up installation hubs. New advertisers are onboarded through the self-serve dashboard. New cities are onboarded by expanding the geo-fence. The technology doesn't change. It just covers more ground.
